Doing it anyway
Many times my clients ask me -- " Will there come a time when I won't be afraid? Depressed? Anxious? Scared? " I tell them. "Depending on your genetics -- probably not. " They gawk. "But at the end of our work, my hope is that you can be all those things and still live a full and meaningful life anyway." My favorite scene at the end the movie A Beautiful Mind is when the schizophrenic is finally medicated and has gotten his life under control. In the middle of class, a messenger shows up to notify him that he has won the Nobel Prize, and he turns and looks at a lecture hall full of students and asks " Is he there? " They nod excitedly. " WIth me, you always have to check."You may always be - anxious, depressed, afraid and schedsoprhenic but they don't have to stop you from living your life. They don't have to drive the bus. At the end of the show, the two characters that haunt him still lurk in the background, but they no longer run his life, or run the show. We get to say to them " Thank you for sharing. And do it anyway! "
